                    Reinventing Portraits

In a semester-long art course in the Fall of 2023, students at the Utah Department of Corrections engaged in questions surrounding portraiture in a contemporary setting.

Those questions included: How do we wish to portray ourselves to the world? What is at stake in the difference between realism and symbolism? How can we depict inner qualities? Aspirations? Unseen beauty?

This project was made possible by the Salt Lake City Arts Council and Make Salt Lake.

Faces of Incarceration

“The faces show the many emotions and anxieties associated with being incarcerated. Fear and hopelessness, worthlessness and helplessness can overwhelm one if allowed to consume you.

Lifting the tab on the outlying face reveals that change and forgiveness can have a physical and emotional impact on one incarcerated at the Utah State Correctional Facility.”
