On November 29, 2023, Alejandro Moya gave an artist talk to students at Salt Lake Valley Youth Center. He showed slides of his artwork and the various issues it delves into, including the word “mestizo” and how it interfaces with social concepts of masculinity in the United States.
He concluded his talk with a drawing activity inspired by Jean-Michele Basquiat. Students were invited to think of words they would use to describe themselves, words others might describe them, and the difference between the two. These words were then incorporated into their pastel drawings as either written normally or crossed out.
